Journey through the volcanic landscapes that shaped New Zealand's largest city. Explore ancient volcanic cones, panoramic summits and places of deep cultural significance as you discover how more than 50 dormant volcanoes transformed Auckland into one of the world's most unique urban landscapes.

Built across the Auckland Volcanic Field, the city is home to more than 50 dormant volcanoes created over 200,000 years. These volcanoes not only shaped Auckland's dramatic landscape but also became important sites for Māori settlement, food storage and defence. Today they provide some of the city's most spectacular viewpoints and tell the remarkable story of Auckland's geological past.

Each volcanic cone reveals a different chapter in Auckland's story. From sweeping summit views and ancient Māori pā sites to lava-formed landscapes and volcanic craters, every stop offers a deeper understanding of the natural forces and cultural heritage that continue to shape the city today.

Travelling with an experienced local guide, you'll visit some of Auckland's most significant volcanic landmarks, including Bastion Point, Māngere Mountain / Te Pane-o-Mataoho, Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill and Maungawhau / Mount Eden. Along the way you'll discover how geology, Māori history and European settlement have all contributed to Auckland's remarkable identity.

Great walking and scenery tour

If you are into geology, this is the Tour you should be on. Louise was a wealth of knowledge in terms of the geological area of Auckland and walking up. The three dormant volcanoes was great exercise, and the views from the top were fantastic. She was a wonderful guide the tour was well worth it.
